Growing axle loads and increasing speeds of the railway vehicles call for ever more efficient wheel set systems. The Bochumer Verein has therefore equipped its existing contour measuring system downline of the hot forming section with an optical laser contour measuring system from LAP Laser. The laser sensors measure wheels immediately after forging and supply the exact profiles in real time. Max Mandt-Merck of the LAP Laser measuring systems sales division is thrilled about the latest CALIX generation: "We have succeeded in producing an even more rugged package incorporating outstanding product features such as contact-free measurement and universal material and temperature compatibility. The CALIX is the only system available on the market that combines temperature stability with mechanical isolation to achieve drift-free measurement. Arcelor Mittal has awarded LAP an order for supply of a laser optical positioning system for beam blanks for its Esch Belval works in Luxemburg. The system will be used to measure length and position of beam blanks on the roller table feeding the walking beam furnace of the rolling mill for piling sections.
