MEASURING SYSTEMS FOR HEAVY PLATES

The Baoshan Iron & Steel Group, Co., Ltd. has built the largest and most modern plate mill in China in Shanghai. With a projected annual output of 1.8 million metric tons it is one of the world’s largest plate mills, too.

The 5 m wide rolling line has been supplied by the German company SMS Demag AG, and started production in 2005. Primarily, plates from 5 to 150 mm thickness for ship building, tube production, and structural steel are rolled. Maintaining the exacting specifications is of utmost importance for these products. Due to the large economic benefits, the Baosteel management decided to use LAP laser gauges at strategic locations throughout the rolling line.

LAP provided all laser measurement systems for the new plant in cooperation with Siemens AG. The systems were shipped and commissioned on a turn-key basis. All systems are adapted to the severe ambient conditions in plate rolling. Large measurement distances, rugged measuring frames, protection against thermal radiation by insulation and separate cooling units, air purging of the optical paths, and a multitude of additional design considerations ensure consistently high accuracy, reliable operation and minimal maintenance efforts.

Measurement of flatness after leveling allows immediate judgment if the plate meets the flatness specifications and can be released for shipment, or if the plate leveling needs to be repeated. Furthermore, the leveler settings can be optimized for the following plates, based on the immediately available flatness results, which can also be used to continuously optimize the control model of the rolling train.

By measuring the plate contour behind the cooling bed, the subsequent processing steps of crop cutting, trimming, slitting, and cut-to-length are optimized. In addition to effective length and width of the plates, saber, necking, crop shape and side profile are taken into consideration to “best fit” the finished sizes into the plate, thereby achieving optimal yield. Crop cut optimization reduces scrap and increases yield and utilization.

As a final step in the production process, thickness and length of the finished plates are assessed behind the Cut-to-Length shears for documentation and archiving. This allows proving compliance with the thickness specifications at any later time.
