LAP, a leading name in laser and radiotherapy QA, is proud to unveil its newest addition to the product portfolio, LUNA 3D, at this year’s ASTRO Annual Meeting in San Diego, California. LUNA 3D marks a significant leap forward in Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), utilizing high-resolution cameras to provide precise and dose-free patient positioning and monitoring throughout the radiotherapy process.

Developed to satisfy the evolving needs of radiotherapy departments, LUNA 3D is set to redefine SGRT by offering comprehensive patient positioning and monitoring, from CT simulation to treatment delivery, compatible with bore-type and C-arm LINACs.

Jens Gauthier, LAP’s Managing Director and head of Business Unit Healthcare, highlights the significance of this technology, saying: “LAP has more than 30 years of experience with real-time surface metrology in processes in the steel industry and other industries. We have transferred this knowledge into radiotherapy and the LUNA 3D system and are able to achieve incredible results from which the patients benefit.”

Key Features and Benefits

Operational ease is at the heart of LUNA 3D's value proposition for radiation oncology teams with intuitive browser-based user interfaces for synchronized data presentation across in-room displays, including tablets and the control-room workstation, large field of view to support ergonomic patient setup also in alignment positions and virtual lasers to visualize deviations of the current patient position from the planned position.

The wealth of data points provided by LUNA 3D facilitates process improvement and automation features. Additionally, it supports online monitoring of patient position during treatment, a crucial element for advanced techniques like Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery with couch rotation.

One standout feature of LUNA 3D is its built-in scalability, accommodating various budgets for new CT and LINAC installations or upgrades of existing imaging and treatment devices. LAP also offers comprehensive SGRT training, including classroom sessions, hands-on experience, and go-live support.

A Collaborative Approach to Innovation

LUNA 3D's development was collaborative, with LAP's development and engineering teams working closely with clinical partners to create a seamless SGRT clinical workflow. The system's design incorporates feedback "from the field" to ensure user-centric hardware and software integration and usability.

LAP aims to obtain clearance for the full commercial release of LUNA 3D in the US in the final quarter of this year, pending 510(k) approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). CE mark approval will enable sales to clinical customers in the European Economic Area, with regulatory approval processes underway for priority markets in Asia. LUNA 3D includes a comprehensive service package in all regions comprising a yearly maintenance visit, software updates, and a configurable multi-year warranty.

LAP's commitment to innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration underscores its dedication to advancing the field of radiotherapy, providing healthcare professionals with tools that improve patient care.
