LAP reaches milestone: 100 LUNA 3D SGRT systems in use worldwide
LAP GmbH Laser Applikationen has delivered its 100th LUNA 3D system for Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT), underscoring its position as a leading provider of precise technologies for patient positioning and monitoring. Clinics across the United States, Europe, and Asia are already using LUNA 3D to ensure safe, reproducible, and efficient patient alignment during CT simulation and treatment on linear accelerators (LINACs), while continuously monitoring patient position in real time.
SGRT for modern radiation therapy
LUNA 3D captures the patient’s surface with high-resolution cameras and an advanced blue‑speckle light projection, enabling highly accurate submillimeter positioning and reliable real-time motion monitoring. The system supports users with a large field of view, ergonomic working positions, and a browser-based user interface that allows access to SGRT data from existing workstations.
"The 100 systems worldwide clearly demonstrate the trust clinical institutions and treatment centers place in our SGRT technology," says Jens Gauthier, Managing Director Healthcare at LAP. "Our decades of expertise in laser-based patient positioning formed the foundation for developing LUNA 3D in a way that consistently reflects real clinical requirements."
An established solution in clinical practice
Since its market launch at ASTRO 2023, LUNA 3D has become a reliable SGRT system across numerous international institutions – including the University Hospital Oldenburg in Germany, the Institut de Cancérologie de Seine-et-Marne in France, Chungbuk National University Hospital in South Korea, and the National Cancer Centre Singapore.
The 100th system was recently installed at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, USA. "When evaluating surface guidance systems, we focused on how they would behave under real clinical conditions rather than idealized ones," says Howard Salmon, PhD, DABR, Chief Physicist & RSO, Franciscan Health (Central Indiana). "LUNA 3D's ability to operate under standard room lighting removed the need for environmental workarounds, and its wide field of view provided flexibility in patient positioning without forcing therapists into constrained setups. The installation process was straightforward because it avoided additional infrastructure, and the resulting workflows have been consistent and repeatable in daily use."
